Ernest Hemingway says, “There is no friend as loyal as a book.” At Redeemed Girl we love reading great books (along with all of Marian’s!) and know that summer can be filled with lots of unscheduled time. We wanted to share some of our favorites that are great for spiritual growth, a fun beach read, or a rainy afternoon! If you haven’t yet, make sure to check out last week’s summer survival guide….
This week Marian and Rebecca share their top picks and next month Millie and Blake will share theirs!
The Knowledge of the Holy (A.W. Tozer) + Renovation of the Heart (Dallas Willard) I’m not sure there are two writers who have had more of an impact on my spiritual growth, knowledge of God and teaching than A.W. Tozer and Dallas Willard. Heaven only knows how many times I’ve quoted both of these men in my books and teachings. I would challenge any woman who wants to seriously grow in her faith to read the works of these great men of God.
Smashed (Koren Zailckas) I read Smashed when I first started Redeemed Girl Ministries. It served as a poignant reminder of why God called me to bring light to those who are in darkness. This books is a no holds barred look at the party scene and the ugliness of the morning after.
When I truly take go on vacation, I absolutely overdose on fiction. I am a voracious reader and I consume nonfiction books on a regular basis for sermon prep and just to stay informed. But fiction, is pure escape reading–brain candy! I was once so engrossed in a Nancy Drew novel in 4th grade that I read all the way through a math test. My teacher gave me a big fat zero because I was so into my book that I didn’t realize she gave us the test and ignored her numerous calls for me to put my book down!.
Honestly, I can’t pick my favorite fiction book but here are a few that I love…
Gone Girl (Gillian Flyn) Amazing Writing, Superb Plot, Won’t-stop-to-eat-until-you’re finished-fiction.
Bridge Over Terabithia (Katherine Paterson) This was my favorite book as a little girl. Still makes me weep.
Redeeming Love (Francine Rivers) One book I guarantee that you won’t want to put down! I took this book with me on a mission trip to India. After a horrendously long plane ride and almost becoming cross eyed from a solid 14 hours of reading…(I was captivated to say the least)…I fell in love with this book! The book of Hosea in the Bible inspires this story. Its theme encompasses the redeeming love of God towards sinners. Just make sure you have tissues handy.
Killing Lincoln (Bill O’Reilly) If you have a love for all things history… this book is for you! To quench my historical infatuation, I recently read this biography about Abraham Lincoln. The author did a phenomenal job of making me feel like I was right in the middle of the story. I walked away with a deeper appreciate for this era and the man of Godly principle that Abraham Lincoln was.
Visioneering (Andy Stanley) By far the most influential book in my Christian walk (second to the Bible, of course)! I aspire to be a visionary leader. I love to dream, plan big and believe God for the impossible. If you have a heart for seeing God make a vision a reality, you must find time to soak in this book!
Happy reading Redeemed Girls!
